Blog Series Part 1 – Florence as Medicine: A Return to Presence
Florence as Medicine: A Return to Presence
I didn’t come to Florence searching for healing.
I came because life whispered: “Slow down. Soften.”
After a season marked by illness and emotional unraveling, my partner and I made the unexpected decision to move to Italy. Not for escape, but for re-connection. What I didn’t realize then was that this ancient city—with its golden light, quiet streets, and slow rhythm—would become one of my greatest teachers.
The First Lesson: Do Less, Feel More
In those early months, I didn’t explore with urgency. Instead, I observed. I sat in the market watching vendors arrange tomatoes like sacred offerings. I listened to conversations I couldn’t translate, but somehow understood. I walked slowly, without aim, through cobbled alleyways, soaking in the scent of herbs, bread, and time.
Florence taught me how to be with what is. And in that space, I began to breathe differently.
Ayurveda & the Environment as Healer
In Ayurveda, we are not separate from our surroundings.
Our environment—its colors, pace, food, language—directly affects our doshas, our Agni, and our emotional wellbeing.
Florence, unknowingly, gave me this:
- A climate that soothed my Vata
- A rhythm that softened my Pitta
- A lifestyle that nourished my Ojas
What I once called slowing down, Ayurveda calls coming into harmony.
The “Dolce Far Niente” Prescription
In Italy, I discovered dolce far niente—the sweetness of doing nothing. Not laziness. Not emptiness. But sacred presence without performance.
I stopped striving and started savoring.
I walked daily—not to burn calories, but to bless my breath.
I cooked daily with intention—not to diet, but to return to ritual.
I let go—not to give up, but to come home.
A Gentle Invitation
This was Florence’s first gift:
✨ Presence is powerful.
✨ Simplicity is sacred.
✨Stillness heals.
If you’re feeling untethered, worn thin, or endlessly doing—perhaps this is your reminder, too.
Let your surroundings hold you.
Let stillness guide you home.
Coming Up Next…
In Part 2 of this series, I’ll share how I rebuilt my relationship with food through Ayurvedic principles and Mediterranean living, where nourishment became my greatest form of devotion.
Because sometimes, the medicine isn’t in the doing.
It’s in the being.
