Blog Series Part 3 – Movement with Meaning

Movement with Meaning: How I Walked My Way Back to Myself

There’s something sacred about walking in Florence.

It’s not just a way to get from one place to another — it’s a rhythm, a ritual, a return to presence. Here, in this Renaissance city shaped by artists and seekers, I rediscovered movement as medicine.

When we first moved to Scandicci, just outside the city center, I didn’t realize how much walking would change me. We live about 20 minutes from Florence by tram, but once we arrived in town, Dilip and I walked everywhere. Along cobbled streets, past ancient stone walls, under quiet olive trees. Sometimes we walked in silence. Other times we laughed. But always, we were present.

Without realizing it, we were walking 10 to 15 miles a week. Not for fitness. Not to track steps. But simply because life unfolded that way here. The more we walked, the more I noticed how different I felt — physically, emotionally, spiritually.

Ayurveda & the Wisdom of Natural Movement

In Ayurveda, daily movement is part of dinacharya — the daily rhythm of a balanced life. But it doesn’t have to be intense. It just has to be aligned with your nature.

  • For Vata types, movement should be grounding: slow walks, soft yoga, dance.
  • For Pitta types, cooling and non-competitive: evening strolls, swimming, restorative flows.
  • For Kapha types, energizing and stimulating: brisk walks, vinyasa yoga, hiking.

What matters most is that we move with intention, not aggression. That we reconnect to our body’s natural rhythms, instead of overriding them.

Movement Tips I Now Live By:

  • I move first thing in the morning — even just 10 minutes to greet the day
  • I walk without distractions — no headphones, no phone calls, just presence
  • I practice gentle yoga flows when I need grounding and clarity
  • I follow the sun and seasons — walking more in spring and fall, slowing down in winter
  • I honor how I feel, not what my fitness tracker tells me

Florence reminded me that exercise doesn’t have to be forced. It can be joyful, spontaneous, and deeply intuitive. It can be about feeling alive, not just looking a certain way.

Movement helped me reconnect with my body in a new, forgiving way. Not as something to sculpt or fix, but as something to listen to. To honor. To love.

And this is what I now carry into my work and upcoming retreat.

Join Us for Harmony Within – An Embodied Retreat in Tuscany

October 17-20, 2025, I’ll be co-leading a retreat in Italy focused on movement, mindfulness, and self-nourishment. Each day will include:

  • Breath-centered yoga led by our gifted teacher from India
  • Mindful walking meditations through nature in the beautiful Tuscan Hills
  • Daily Ayurveda practices to restore your inner rhythm
  • Space to reflect, reset, and move with meaning

Whether you’re healing, evolving, or simply seeking stillness, this retreat is for you.

Stay tuned for Part 4 of this series, where I’ll share how I rebuilt my rituals of self-care and emotional nourishment through Ayurveda.

Because healing is never just about one thing. It’s about creating a life where every breath, every step, and every meal becomes a prayer.

And movement, I’ve learned, can lead us home.
