Basil Cucumber Salad (Pitta-Balancing)

Here’s a refreshing and Ayurvedic-inspired recipe for a Basil Cucumber Salad — simple, hydrating, and perfect for balancing Pitta dosha, especially in warmer months.

Servings: 2–3
Prep Time: 10 minutes

Dosha Focus: Pitta-pacifying (cooling, calming, hydrating)
Style: Mediterranean-Ayurvedic Fusion

Ingredients:

  • 1 large English cucumber (or 2 Persian cucumbers), thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, chopped or torn
  • 1 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped (optional for extra cooling)
  • 1 tbsp cold-pressed olive oil
  • 1 tsp lime juice or lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • ¼ tsp fennel powder (cooling and digestive)
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Optional garnish: toasted sesame seeds or sunflower seeds
  • Optional: 1 tbsp plain coconut yogurt for a creamy twist

Instructions:

  1. Slice the cucumber thinly and place it in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the chopped basil and mint.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime/lemon juice, fennel powder, and salt.
  4. Pour the dressing over the cucumber and herbs. Toss gently to coat.
  5. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Garnish with sesame seeds or a spoonful of coconut yogurt (if using), and serve chilled.

Ayurvedic Notes:

  • Cucumber cools the body and soothes heat-related imbalances.
  • Basil and mint help calm the mind and support digestion.
  • Fennel reduces acidity and enhances digestive comfort, great for Pitta.
  • Light, hydrating, and tridoshic (mostly Pitta-Vata supportive).
