AYURVEDA & THE SEASONS: SUMMER

Ayurvedic Tips to Balance Pitta in Summer

In summer, when Pitta dosha naturally rises due to the hot, sharp, and intense qualities of the season, Ayurveda recommends a cooling, calming, and hydrating approach to maintain balance.

Here are practical, gentle, and effective Ayurveda tips for balancing Pitta during summer:

What is Pitta?

Pitta is the fire + water element, responsible for digestion, metabolism, vision, and transformation in the body. When out of balance (especially in summer), it can cause:

  • Irritability or anger
  • Skin issues (acne, rashes, inflammation)
  • Acid reflux, loose stools, excessive hunger
  • Overheating, red eyes, and restlessness

1. Favor Cooling Foods

Choose:

  • Sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes
  • Fresh fruits: coconut, watermelon, grapes, pomegranate, pears
  • Cooked veggies: zucchini,  cucumber, leafy greens, asparagus
  • Cooling grains: rice, barley, oats
  • Cooling herbs: coriander, mint, fennel

Reduce:

  • Spicy, sour, salty, oily, and fermented foods
  • Red chilies, vinegar, pickles, onions, garlic
  • Excessive caffeine and alcohol

2. Hydrate with Pitta-Pacifying Drinks

  • Coconut water (natural electrolyte)
  • Cucumber or mint-infused water
  • Rose water + cardamom + fennel tea
  • Aloe vera juice (1–2 tbsp in water, mornings)
  • Buttermilk (takra) with roasted cumin and mint

3. Use Cooling Oils for Body & Mind

  • Coconut oil or Brahmi oil for self-abhyanga (oil massage)
  • Apply sandalwood or rose water to the forehead or heart center
  • Foot massage at night with ghee or coconut oil calms heat and helps sleep

4. Lifestyle & Routine

  • Avoid peak sun (10am–3pm); stay in shade or indoors
  • Practice moon salutations (Chandra Namaskar) instead of sun salutations
  • Wear light, breathable cottons in whites, blues, or greens
  • Keep your pace gentle and intentional; overexertion increases Pitta

5. Mind & Emotions

  • Pitta emotions = anger, impatience, competitiveness
  • Balance with:
    • Meditation with cooling breath (Sheetali/Sheetkari pranayama)
    • Journaling or expressive arts to soften intensity
    • Nature time: water bodies, moon gazing, early morning walks

Bonus: Pitta-Pacifying Treat

Try a spoonful of rose petal jam (gulkand) in the afternoon with warm milk or alone—it soothes Pitta, supports digestion, and reduces internal heat.
